Princess Ida is a witty satire on the Emancipation of Women in the late 19th century.  The theme is sympathetically treated with gentle humour.  Sullivan produced some of his finest music for the piece and the Grand Operatic Style is much more prominent than in any of his previous comic operas, yet there is still the sense of fun and lightness of touch which typifies Sullivan at his best.
